The Fast-Forward Festival is a speculative fiction web magazine with an emphasis on (but not limited to) time travel. Issue #2 is slated for release on July 2nd, and we currently are seeking short story submissions!
Time travel is one of the most fertile ideas to come out of the science fiction and fantasy genres. Each issue, we’ll showcase 1-4 excellent pieces about various kinds of journeys through time. Give us alternate dimensions, voyages into the deep future, and garbage cans that contain portals to Ming Dynasty China. Feel free to turn our preconceptions upside-down.
Just because we’re fascinated by time travel, though, doesn’t mean we aren’t interested in other types of stories! Try us - we take science fiction and fantasy, and humorous, experimental, and mainstream styles are all welcome.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
We all exist in time. Or do we? Time travel is one of the most fertile ideas to come out of the science fiction and fantasy genres. It’s potentious (yes, we made up that word). Do anything you like with it: we want to see it.
Try us. Startle us. We take science fiction and fantasy (and at least one of the editors has a soft spot for dragons)
We’ll read experimental styles and traditional ones alike, and always enjoy humorous, life-affirming pieces—the ones that make us say, “Woohoo! It’s good to be a human!” And if someone writes a story that feels like Our Town, then becomes infested with vampires, we’d be quite grateful.
Speculative fiction is just like any other fiction, except that it includes a leap into something previously unimagined. Give us that delicious strangeness. Give us that eeriness, when something well-known reveals its second face.
We take stories between 100 and 5,000 words. If your piece is longer than 5,000 words, but you think we’ll go bananas over it, query us first.
We accept reprints, as long as you own the rights to the story and inform us where it was published before.
We accept multiple submissions.
We take simultaneous submissions, as long as authors let us know immediately if the work has been accepted elsewhere.
We’ll try to respond to all submissions within a three-week time frame. Feel free to query if we haven’t responded in forty days.
RIGHTS:
Authors retain the copyright to their work at all times. We ask for the right to keep the work on the website indefinitely, and to publish it in future e-book anthologies, unless the author specifically requests to have it removed.
HOW TO SUBMIT:
All fiction submissions should be sent as .doc or .rtf attachments to submissions@fastforwardfest.com. Please use standard manuscript format (12 pt. font, Courier or Times New Roman, double-spaced). Don’t forget to put your last name, the title, and page number at the top of every page. Have the subject-line of the email read “SUBMISSION: Your Story Title”.
Cover letters are welcome, but not required. If you want to let us know a little about your life or previous publications, go ahead. If not, it won’t affect the status of your pieces.
