Call for Nominees for the Global Filipino Literary Awards
Deadline: 23 May 2012

Our Own Voice, the Literary Ezine for Filipinos in the Diaspora announces the call for entries for the 2012 Global Filipino Literary Awards.

Nominations to the GFLA may be submitted by authors, publishers and booksellers. The deadline is on May 23, 2012 and these are nominations only for books by Filipino authors published in 2010 and 2011. The Awardees will be announced in the Winter Issue of Our Own Voice.

The Global Filipino Literary Awards was established in 2003 to recognize publishers and authors for their efforts in advancing contemporary Filipino Literature. No monetary prize is given but gift prizes and a citation is given to each recipient in the categories of Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry.

The GFLA Collection is the only one of its kind given the distinction of being catalogued as a special collection within the South East Asian Collection and is housed in the Asian Reading Room. The Library of Congress is the world’s most prestigious institution with collections from countries all over the world and is also home to the U.S. Copyright Office. The Library was founded in 1800 by a special act of congress, and signed into law by President John Adams.

The Philippines has a unique history with the Library, it is the only Asian colony the United States acquired via the Treaty of Paris in 1899. Its colonial status made English the unifying language of the Philippines for almost half a century. Filipino writing in English continues to be the medium of mastery among writers of Filipino descent in communities worldwide.
