10 April 2012
Indonesia: The New Emerging Economy Essay Competition (US)
Deadline: 15 July 2012

A writing contest administered by the Education Division of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the Northern Illinois University

BACKGROUND

The Comprehensive Partnership Agreement between the Republic of Indonesia and the United States of America calls for strengthening bilateral partnership in the area of higher education. This mutual partnership will be enhanced through understanding each other’s countries.

In line with the agreement, and reflecting the importance of promoting Indonesia into the broader U.S. community, the Education Attaché of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Washington, D.C., invites centers for Southeast Asian Studies in U. S. universities to collaborate on a writing contest, the goal of which is to promote Indonesia to U.S. citizens while seeking a critical evaluation of contemporary developments in Indonesia.

In the past five years or so, Indonesia has experienced steady economic growth at roughly 6 percent annually and, as the largest democratic majority-Muslim country in the world, is rising as a regional power with global role. Indonesia has taken a significant role in the Doha round of international trade and negotiation, in United Nations reform, in G20 participation, and in advancing global climate negotiation. It has been predicted that Indonesia in the next ten to fifteen years will reach a stage where annual income per capita will reach $15,000, making it an important new emerging market.

It is also widely accepted that Indonesia still faces problems internally. The quality of infrastructure has to be improved and there are still social problems in some areas to be resolved. Corruption is a major hurdle for speedy development. The quality of democracy and the governance in a decentralized government needs to be improved as well as the quality of primary as well as higher education overall.

An analytical view of these recent developments in Indonesia is essential for the country to keep development on track. This contest is an opportunity for anyone interested in Indonesia to examine these issues and express their views in a 2,000- to 4,500-word essay.
