TMS’s Fellowship is at the core of our program in Hyderabad, India. We recruit dynamic individuals from top four-year institutions with strong backgrounds in creative technology and leadership skills. Our Fellows desire to be educators and demonstrate a strong interest in bridging the digital and educational divide on a global level. Fellows work as digital storytelling instructors at low income schools in the urban metropolis of Hyderabad. Additionally, Fellows structure and run workshops with local community organizations based in Southern India.
In addition to recruiting recent college graduates, TMS hires young teachers who have one or more years of experience teaching full-time in American classrooms. These teachers serve as mentor teachers to Fellows who are entering their first year in the classroom.
The TMS Fellowship is both an exercise in independence and collaboration, as Fellows plan and deliver many of their lessons together. Depending on the number of Fellows and schools, the experience will involve both group and individual teaching. While adhering to structured goals and having TMS signature curriculum to work from, Fellows have freedom both individually and as a collaborative team to design their own lesson plans.
Required Skills:
Past Fellows have hailed from institutions like Middlebury College, Columbia University, Brown University, NYU and University of Pennsylvania. TMS Fellow Alumni have gone on to graduate programs in Media Studies, Law, and International Relations and have continued to teach, engage in social activism and study the power of stories in the contemporary world!
Fellowship Details:
Fellows’ day-to-day schedule involves...
Teaching six-month workshops to groups of 8th and 9th class students at low income schools in the greater Hyderabad region. Teaching at certain schools involves collaboration with local teaching fellows who are underserved Muslim women from the Old City of Hyderabad. Classes take place at each school 2-3 times a week for 1.5-2 hour sessions, and Fellows teach at 3-4 schools at a time.
And the 6th month semester involves:
Collaborating with other nonprofit initiatives to teach shorter term workshops involving groups of educators and students at schools where a technology program is being implemented.
Fellows always work with TMS’ customized digital storytelling curriculum — moving students through the development of personal, social, & environmental stories, building both hard and soft skills. During the six month workshops, Fellows are expected to lead their students through the production of photo stories, a short video piece and a longer video documentary. Throughout the semester, Fellows engage students in English language practice, discussion based learning and encourage students to think critically and select topics for their projects that are personally, culturally and environmentally relevant.
Timeline: Fellows work full-time for a six-month period (June-December)
Living: TMS coordinators generally arrange living accommodations for Fellows in Hyderabad, and conduct an online orientation before in-country arrival on teaching/technology preparation and cultural awareness.
Stipend: The Modern Story provides Fellows with a travel and living stipend for the duration of the Fellowship. However, as part of the Fellowship experience, Fellows are expected to participate in fundraising efforts, as well as to live modestly during the semester.
Methodology:
The purpose of The Modern Story Fellowship is to 1) introduce and sustain progressive pedagogy and a creative multimedia curriculum in governmental schools and community organizations, and 2) offer recent college graduates and young teachers the opportunity to participate in direct service work abroad within the fields of education and technology.
Outcomes:
Youth learn and apply advanced literacy and English language skills, and develop a set of 21st century digital skills that contribute to their vocational training.
Students connect their voices to the global community by sharing their work on a weblog and through exchanges with teenagers near and far.
Students learn about career opportunities in the technology sector by participating in TMS-supported career panels and mentorship programs with top technology companies.
Exploring their personal, social, and environmental surroundings, participants of TMS are empowered to think critically, create, share, and then take action in their communities.
Experiential learning projects allow students to initiate connections with organizations that are working to directly solve the social and environmental issues that the students identify.

- Knowledge of multimedia arts including photography, basic videography, video editing (Final Cut Pro, iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premiere, PowerPoint)
- Knowledge of social media and general technological savviness (hardware and software troubleshooting)
- A background or strong interest in education
- Sharp writing skills and a knowledge of narrative techniques and structure
- Organizational skills and flexibility
- Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and collaboratively
- A conceptual understanding of Digital Storytelling and its use as a tool of social empowerment
- Understanding of India history, Indian contemporary society and an anti-colonial model of nonprofit work
- Experience abroad or desire to live abroad in a developing country with a modest lifestyle
- Knowledge of Telugu, Hindi, or Urdu is not required but preferred
