The National Book Trust, India (NBT) an autonomous organisation under the Department of Secondary & Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, was established in 1957. It is a professional body working towards the promotion of books and the habit of reading in the country. The major activities of the Trust include publishing, promotion of books and reading, promotion of Indian books abroad, assistance to authors and publishers, and promotion of children’s literature.
The first edition of the World Book Fair was organized in 1972 with 200 publishers participating in an area of 7780 sq metres. Forty years on, the biennial fair has grown tremendously in terms of numbers.
The 20th New Delhi World Book Fair Kicks off on the 25th of February-4th March 2012. Eight first-time countries like France, Turkey, Iran, Mexico, Malaysia and Hong Kong are participating in the book fair. The fair is set to be inaugurated by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal and actor Farooque Sheikh. Aiming to make the fair a one-stop platform for scholars, researchers and others, NBT, in consultation with the Planning Commission is mulling a separate pavilion dedicated to the publications of state and Central government departments. This is to highlight the developments made in their respective fields.
The fair will see participation of bestselling authors like William Dairymple,Shiv Khera,Sam Millar and celebrities like APJ Abdul Kalam Shashi Tharoor,Anupam Kher,Javed Akhtar,Amol Palekar and many more. The total area is expected to increase to 50,000 sq metres from that of 12,000 sq metres in the last edition. There will be a total of 2,000 stalls spread across seven pavilions and 300 independent stands.
