Deadline: 30 August 2011
Nandini Chemical Journal (www.nandinichemical.com), a renowned monthly online journal published from Chennai by a team of chemical engineers and technologists is conducting an All India Essay Competition on “ALGAE BIOFUEL – INDIA’S OPPORTUNITIES”.
Objective
India is now facing an impending energy crisis, as the country’s production of crude oil is remaining nearly stagnant at around 30 million tonnes per annum and the present import level of crude oil is around 180 million tonnes per annum. It is likely that Indian import of crude oil would go up and touch around 230 million tonnes per annum in the next few years, if the present growth of industrial development have to be sustained. Obviously, India’s dependence on crude oil imports will reach an unacceptable level.
Under the circumstances, India has to urgently find an alternate fuel to meet it’s need, appropriate to the Indian scenario.
It appears that algae biofuel (fuel produced from algae crop) is the best and most appropriate alternate biofuel for India, that would save India from the likely fuel oil crisis.
Huge efforts are now being made in the developed countries to carry out research and development activities on algae biofuel from cultivation, extraction of oil and production point of view. Unfortunately, India is yet to start such research and development activities on algae biofuel at adequate scale, in spite of India’s tropical conditions and long sea coast being highly appropriate for algae growth.
With the objective of drawing national focus on algae biofuel and developing an appropriate concept and strategy for research development and exploitation of algae biofuel opportunities in India, an All India Essay Competition is now being organized by Nandini Chemical Journal .
