Farsi-English Translator Needed for Persian Cookbook (Encino, Los Angeles)

I am writing a narrative cookbook (recipes interspersed through prose) about the life experiences of my Persian grandmother. She has led a fascinating life and it’s a story just waiting to be told. The one problem is that she and I don’t have a language in common. This is where you would come in.

I need a balanced Farsi-English bilingual to interview her at her house in Encino and translate her stories and recipes for me. It’s fine if you use a tape recorder in person, and then do the translation on your own; whatever works best.

You don’t need to be from Iran, but should at least have grown up speaking the language. Of course I also need someone with strong writing skills in English. I would prefer a college graduate or current student, and some experience with translation would be nice but not absolutely necessary. Experience with food and cooking (even if just at home) will count as a huge plus. Most importantly, you should be friendly and patient, so that my grandmother will feel at ease speaking to you.

I can pay $16 per hour for three or four 3-hour interview sessions, plus $100 upon completion of the translation. Perks include some delicious food that my grandmother will undoubtedly force you to eat, being paid in cash, and a translator credit in the book when it eventually comes out. Please e-mail the address above with a little paragraph about yourself, along with your resume and a phone number. Feel free to include any questions you may have about the job.

Daniel
