The Brunei History Centre at Bandar Seri Begawan will hold its Brunei History Writing Contest with the following categories: pictorial story/ illustration and essays on Brunei History. We found these old rules from their 2007 contest. Please note that there may be some changes:

The writing competition is aimed at exposing writing talents in the Sultanate. It is also hoped to document historical Bruneian materials for publishing as well as to strengthen originality and to enhance enthusiasm and patriotism towards Brunei Darussalam.

The writing aspect of the Syair is freestyle but must be in the direction of Brunei‘s history and must not be in opposition against the fundamentals and philosophy of Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB).

The competition is open to the public and permanent residents of Brunei Darussalam aged at least 18 years and above.

Participants should send in four copies of the manuscripts including the original in a diskette and should submit their own original Syair.

The Syair should be not be less than 70 verses and not more than 90 and must be typed according to the writers‘ technique on one side of the column on an A4 paper.

Manuscripts that are incomplete will be revoked according to rules and regulations.

Manuscripts should be sent to Secretary, Perduan Mengarang Syair Sejarah, Pusat Sejarah Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan, BS8610, and Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The application form for the competition can be obtained at the Brunei History Centre counter during office hours from Sam to 4.30pm.
