Open to all primary and secondary students enrolled in WA public and private schools, the 2011 Hyogo Essay Competition celebrates the 30th Anniversary of the WA-Hyogo Sister State Relationship.
Developed to increase WA (Australia) students’ understanding of the WA–Hyogo Sister State relationship, students are encouraged to enter one of four essay categories:
Essay Categories
Category 1 (Years 10 – 12)
Imagine you are in charge of developing the 30th Sister State Anniversary visit program for a WA delegation to visit the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. Plan a one week tour itinerary to showcase the Hyogo Prefecture. (Essay length: Maximum two A4 pages.)
Category 2 (Years 6 – 9)
If you had a chance to visit Hyogo, where would you go and why? (Essay length: Maximum two A4 pages.)
Category 3 (Years 4 – 5)
What are the differences between WA and Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture?(For example: food, culture and lifestyle.)(Essay length: Maximum one A4 page.)
Category 4 (Years 1 – 3)
What are the differences between WA and Japan’s Hyogo Prefecture? (For example: food, culture and lifestyle.) (Essay length: Maximum one A4 page.)
Prizes
Category 1
Three lucky winners from Category 1 win a trip to the Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. The one-week trip includes return flights and the opportunity to experience the Japanese culture through a home-stay in Hyogo.
Categories 2 – 4
Each winner in Categories 2-4 wins a night’s accommodation at the Wabi Sabi Ryokan, a Japanese get-away in Perth. This overnight stay for two people will introduce the winners to Japanese architecture, gardens and food including a Japanese style dinner and breakfast.
How to submit your essay
Entry format:
• Submit your essay as a hard copy on A4 paper. (Preferably typed or using block letters if handwritten.)
• Write your essay in English.
• Include a bibliography of sourced materials. (Not required for Category 4 {Years 1-3}.)
• Keep a copy of your essay. (Submitted essays will not be returned.)
• The Government of Western Australia will retain Copyright of all competition essays.

Winners Announced
Competition winners will be notified by email and invited to attend a Presentation Ceremony in mid 2011 at the Hyogo Prefectural Government Cultural Centre.
Judges
A panel of judges from the Hyogo Prefectural Government Cultural Centre, the Department of State Development, and the Department of Education will select the essay winners. The judges’ decision is final.
