Managing Editor
An exciting opportunity exists for a competent Managing Editor wishing to unleash his or her editorial and entrepreneurial skills in a young, dynamic and innovative company.
The most suitable person for this role will be someone who is passionate about magazines, crazy about the internet and someone who enjoys managing people and projects and who has long experience in print publishing.
Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, you will manage a team of editors and be responsible for the flow of all editorial content from line-up creation to final proof stage. Playing a pivotal role, you will ensure all content is produced on schedule by setting deadlines and monitoring page flow, as well as managing the approval process and the workload of the team. You will be responsible for the editorial budget and ensuring that editorial costs translate directly into high-quality content. You will sign-off on all editorial pages and therefore you are required to possess excellent attention to detail and the ability to work well under the pressure of tight deadlines. As this key position will liaise with other teams, you will have the skills to successfully manage interdepartmental relationships. Knowledge of InDesign, a keen interest in luxury lifestyle and society contacts are a distinct advantage.
Responsibilities
* Assist Editor-in-Chief in developing the annual publishing plan, from conceptualisation through publication.
* Assist the Editor-in-Chief in conceptualising and developing new marketable editorial products and offerings with a particular focus on developing Tatler band extensions.
* Write and produce content for Tatler Magazines at the direction of the Editor-in-Chief
* Commissioning freelance authors and editors
* Write 3+ blog posts per week for asiatatler.com
* Ensure that all content is published in an unbiased, professional, accurate, fact-based and differentiated manner.
* Make presentations and communicate with clients, advertisers, and sales and marketing personnel in order to explain the Tatler editorial product and DNA.
* Identify market needs and maintain an up-to-date awareness of trends and issues.
* The successful candidate will manage and motivate a team of young, talented, international editors, creatives, writers and staff to produce world class magazines
* He or she will will also be a role model for other members of the team.
* The Managing Editor is expected to be on time, especially since the enforcement of deadlines is among his/her primary duties.
* Administering day-to-day operations of the magazine and enforce the magazine's policy and procedures, including deadlines and style.
* Together with the Editor-in-Chief acts as liaison between editorial and advertising and participate in advertising sales meetings as required.
* Handles day to day Editorial HR issues
* Acts as the Editor-in-Chief in case of E-in-C's absence
* Manages and keeps track of the Editorial budget and expenses in order to ensure on budget on time delivery of high quality editorial content.
Qualities and Experience Required
* Proven track record in a senior editorial role.
* Strong journalism experience and skills ideally with some exposure to on-line publishing
* Ability to absorb new ideas and concepts quickly and to ensure they are clearly communicated to an audience.
* Extensive management and organisational experience and strong project management skills and experience with planning, budgeting and supervising creative staff.
* Ability to manage and co-ordinate the end-to-end publishing process while meeting deadlines and budget requirements
* Ability to work independently, exercising discretion and judgment to meet company objectives.
* Problem-solving skills to deal effectively with situations requiring in-depth analysis.
* Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
* Extensive network of top writers and photographers.
* Society and luxury lifestyle contacts and experience is an advantage.
* Keen interest or connoisseurship in facets of luxury lifestyle (fashion, art, gastronomy, etc)
* Impeccable communication skills including the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with authors and colleagues.
* A passion for technology
* Excellent command of English.
