Job Description:

The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai has a vacancy for an experienced Managing Editor to join the Communications & Publications team. The Communications & Publications department is responsible for the corporate communications and public affairs activities of the Chamber including: production of a suite of corporate publications, media relations, issue management, preparation of research reports and briefing material, preparation of communication plans and publicity material and management of the AmCham Shanghai website. The position reports to the Director, Communications & Publications.

The Managing Editor position manages, oversees and undertakes editorial, design and production processes across the publishing program including the flagship magazine, Insight, the annual Membership Directory, the Orientation China Guidebook, Viewpoint business brief series and the China Business Report. The ideal candidate will be a native speaker of English and have at least three years experience writing, editing and managing publications in a corporate communications team or an English language business publication.

Duties:

• Manage and undertake editorial, design and production processes across the Chamber’s publishing program including writing, layout, copy editing, and proof reading.

• Implement quality standards for writing, editorial, design and publishing services.

• In consultation with the Director, develop design briefs for publications.

• Manage contracts with vendors for design and print production work.

• Manage publication project schedules and budgets to ensure publications are completed on time and on budget

• Recruit, manage and regularly evaluate a team of freelance journalists, photographers, translators, illustrators and designers.

• Mentor and train editorial staff

• Work with the Director, Communications and Publications to develop a yearly publication plan and budget and long term objectives for AmCham Shanghai publications

• Any other duties as directed by the Director, Communications and Publications.

Selection Criteria:

• High level of competence and experience in business writing, editing and publishing – print and electronic.

• Demonstrated ability to edit material for publication and display, in variety of forms and the ability to achieve a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

• High level of project management skills including proven ability to develop and maintain publishing schedules, manage multiple projects and contracts within budget and fixed deadlines, and supervise contract and in-house writers, designers and printers.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, outstanding written communication skills and high level oral communication, liaison and negotiation skills.

• Proven capacity to work effectively (both independently and cooperatively) in a team of multi-skilled communication professionals.

• Up-to-date, detailed understanding of Chinese current affairs and China business issues as they relate to American business; understanding of U.S.-China relations and policy issues a plus.

• Must show initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, resourcefulness and capacity to think creatively.

• Willingness to contribute to the work of the team and the Chamber and work under pressure in an organized way to meet deadlines.

• Native English speaker is essential; Chinese language ability would be a plus.

• Degree in business, economics, communications, journalism or relevant discipline. Relevant work experience in a publishing environment.

• Advanced skills in design software packages, specifically: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat would be highly regarded.
