ABOUT GUJARAT NATIONAL LAW UNIVERSITY (GNLU)
Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar was established under the Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003, a statutory legislation passed by the Government of Gujarat.
The main objective of the GNLU is “to advance and disseminate learning and knowledge of law and legal processes and their role in national development: to develop in the students and the research scholars sense of responsibility to serve society in the field of law by developing skills in regard to advocacy, legal services, legislation, parliamentary practice, law reforms and such other matters; to make law and legal processes efficient instruments of social development; and to promote inter-disciplinary study of law in relation to management, technology, international cooperation and development.”
To accomplish these objectives the GNLU has adopted a - five years Medium Term Plan 2014 in December 2008. This Medium Term Plan was adopted with a view to become a world class law university in India and the GNLU has already proving its vibrant presence through high standards in legal education, research, training and extension activities with the help of motivated staff, committed students. GNLU is the only national law university which offers integrated law degree in four areas - B.A., LL.B. (Hon.), B.Com., LL.B. (Hon.), B.B.A., LL.B. (Hon.), B.Sc., LL.B. (Hon.), two years LL.M. and Ph. D. in laws and inter-disciplinary fields as well as diploma/certificate courses. GNLU is also functioning as the Nodal Agency, empowered to enhance the standards of legal education, research, training and extension for 32 law colleges in Gujarat and excellent two-way relationships with these colleges and students.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION
First GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition, 2010-11 seeks to address the emerging issues in the fields of Intellectual Property Law. The main objective of the Competition is to initiate an intellectual churning process for realizing the importance of Intellectual Property and challenges. It endeavours to encourage and promote creative, logical thinking and knowledge about legal understanding and research amongst students.
ELIGIBILITY
Contestant must be a full-time law student (LL.B/ LL.M) in any recognised degree College / University/Institution in India.
GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION
1. Essays must not be longer than 3,000 words. It must be accompanied by an abstract of not more than 300 words. The abstract will be used by the jury for pre-selection.
2. All submissions must be typewritten in Garamond, 12 Font Size, 1.5 Line Spacing and Headings/Titles must be in Capital.
3. Quotes and references must be clearly marked throughout the essay (preferably in italics) and properly cited. Any method of citation can be followed but is required to be consistent throughout the text.
4. Submissions can only be made online, in English. All submissions are to be electronically mailed to ipessay@gnlu.ac.in
5. Entries will be accepted only in MS WORD format.
6. The identity of the author is not allowed to be indicated anywhere in the text. All submissions will be blind reviewed. References to specific individuals, firms, or schools, which might reveal the author's identity are strongly discouraged and shall be liable to be disqualified.
7. Entries should be accompanied by a cover page with the author/s name, mailing address, telephone, fax numbers, and e-mail address; name, address of the institution where the student is enrolled, year of study.
8. Word count is required to be mentioned on the cover page.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1. Last date of submission is 25th February, 2011. Any entry after the prescribed date shall not be entertained.
2. Participant should not submit more than one entry.
3. Joint Authorship is allowed, but it should not exceeding two participants.
4. All submissions must be original. No previously published material will be accepted. Any form of plagiarism will result in automatic disqualification.
5. All essays received in the competition become the property of GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition, which reserves the right to publish the essays in any form-electronic or print.
6. The contestants by entering in the contest give GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition the right to publicise the winning entries without any royalty or compensation.
7. The contestants by entering in the contest agree to indemnify GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition from and against all claims, suits, and damages based on any claim of copyright infringement or plagiarism or unauthorized use.
8. Neither GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition nor the committee will be responsible for any condition beyond its control that may cause the contest to be interrupted.
9. The decision of the Jury shall be final and will not be subject to an appeal.
10. 1st GNLU - Y. J. Trivedi Annual Intellectual Property Rights Essay Competition shall take no responsibility in any matter arising out of any dispute as regards the authenticity of the submitted work.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Essays will be judged on the basis of its content, lucidity and originality. The quality of analysis, meticulousness of research, will be considered in its comprehensiveness. Other aspects of quality such as rationality, approach, structure and innovative application will be other parameters of evaluation.
The entries will be judged by jury of leading law academicians, jurists, and law practitioners from across the world. The committee is free to determine its own method and system of analysing and judging the essays and has absolute discretion of selecting the essays. The decision of the committee will be final and binding.
