ICIMOD is a regional knowledge development and learning centre serving the eight regional member countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalayas – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, and Pakistan. We are working to develop an economically and environmentally sound mountain ecosystem to improve the living standards of mountain populations -– now, and for the future.
Communications and dissemination lie at the heart of the Centre’s activities; the Senior Editor is overall responsible for the final preparation of a wide range of materials published every year. ICIMOD has recently undergone a branding process, and the Senior Editor is also largely responsible for ensuring that branding is maintained across the Centre.
The position is designed for an experienced and self-motivated person with a background in editing/ writing and production of communications materials for international development organisations, and experience of working with a corporate brand. Under the overall supervision of the Programme Manager IKM, and the direct supervision of the Head of the Communications Division, the Senior Editor will:
• Assist ICIMOD with all its written communications, including adaptation of style in order to achieve maximum impact of messages
• Oversee the use of ICIMOD’s brand design in all areas of ICIMOD’s work
• Edit, finalise, oversee production, and ensure overall quality and consistency of a range of publications including technical reports, general-audience articles, information sheets, posters, brochures, presentations, and others, including rewriting and tailoring language for different users, and supervision of editing consultants
• Edit/write press releases and media background material
• Write/edit material to enrich and update the ICIMOD website
• Write summaries and syntheses of ICIMOD and partners work for dissemination
• Help in evaluating material proposed for publication, and suggesting appropriate forms for dissemination
• Evaluate branded items and ensure consistency of brand application
• Offer training to ICIMOD staff to support development of writing and communication skills and in branding applications
• Support the development of new communications instruments
We expect the successful candidate to have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in natural or social sciences, or in journalism, mass communications or equivalent; excellent written and spoken English (native speaker preferred); at least five years of experience in editing and writing for development organisations for a variety of media; familiarity with production and layout approaches; familiarity with the concept and application of a corporate design (brand) and of working with brand guidelines; extensive experience with Microsoft Office applications; excellent inter-personal skills, and ability to work as a team member with colleagues of different nationalities/cultural backgrounds; and ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
