Filipina Wins ASEAN Essay Writing Competition
Two young Filipinos will be among those who will be awarded as winners in the ASEAN Drawing Competition and ASEAN Essay Writing Competition conducted in line with the ASEAN Disaster Management Day and International Day for Disaster Reduction.

Eleven years old Tristan F. Tizon of the Philippines is second placer in the ASEAN Drawing Competition on the theme "My City, My Future ? Making ASEAN Cities Safe from Disaster."

Mr. Tizon will receive $500 in cash and certificate as prize. He will also receive cash prize and certificate from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

On the other hand, Ma. Aletha A. Nogra of the Philippines won first place in the ASEAN Essay Writing Competition on the theme "The Role of Youth in Urban Disaster Risk Management."

An advisory posted at the ASEAN Secretariat website stated that the awarding will be held during the joint conference and commemoration program at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand at 9:30 in the morning of October 13.

The ASEAN Secretariat, the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR), and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) are conducting a joint regional observance of the International Day for Disaster Reduction and the ASEAN Disaster Management Day on Wednesday, 13 October 2010.

The event is part of the Making Cities Resilient:'My city is getting ready' world disaster reduction campaign 2010.

The event will be highlighted with the award ceremony and mark the conclusion of the Regional Drawing Competition on'My City, My Future ? Making ASEAN Cities Safe from Disaster' and'My City, My Future ? Making South Asia Cities Safe from Disaster.

The prizes will be awarded to the winners on the occasion. The exhibition of drawings has been organized by UNISDR. The event will be followed by a panel discussion on'Building Disaster-Resilient Cities in Asia'.
