An interdisciplinary conference exploring the aspirations of and challenges facing the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula, Iran, and Iraq (immediately following BRISMES 2011 at Exeter, 27–29 June) .
Some suggested topics for papers and panels: nationalization and self-sufficiency;
labourers and expatriates; popular views of “the Other” in the Gulf; mutual perceptions within
the Gulf; education; representation and accountability; municipal and national elections; reform
and liberalization; the limits of public discourse / freedom of speech; gender equality and civil
rights; heritage, identity, and belonging; official and alternative narratives; transparency and
foreign investment; local perceptions of security; integration and disintegration / unity and
disunity; challenges of political economy and welfare; popular and youth cultures; local views
of history and material culture; civil society; environment; etc.
Papers and pre-organized panels are invited. Abstracts must be received by 20 January
2011 (full papers are also accepted as a basis for selection). Notification of acceptance will be
made during February. The deadline for conference registration is 12 May 2011. If accepted,
full draft papers must be received by 30 May 2011. Please email your 200–300 word abstract,
a short biographical statement, your contact details and affiliation in a MS Word file to Dr
James Onley at j.onley@exeter.ac.uk. Panel submissions should also have one paper per file.
