British Consulate General Shanghai Essay Competition
Deadline: 8 November 2010

Take part in the essay competition to win work experience at Chatham House!

As part of UK Pavilion's International Policy Week at Expo (18-22 October), the British Consulate General in Shanghai announced today the launch of an online essay competition that will offer Chinese students the chance to win a week's work experience at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) in London, a leading source of independent analysis and debate on global issues.

The competition was launched at a live press conference attended by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Director of Strategy Peter Wilson and the Director of Chatham House Robin Niblett, and will represent the first time the two institutions have worked together on an education initiative focused directly on bringing Chinese students of International Policy to the UK. The British Consul-General in Shanghai Carma Elliot OBE endorsed the collaboration saying: “I am thrilled that we are able to work with the Royal Institute of International Affairs in London to offer students such a unique opportunity. International Policy Week at the UK Pavilion will not only bring together some of today's best policy thinkers from UK and China, but will through this initiative, celebrate and encourage those of tomorrow.” Robin Niblett added: “I am delighted that we are able to participate in this initiative which will offer the winner an opportunity to visit London and to gain insights into the research and events at Chatham House.” A personal note from Her Majesty's Ambassador to China Sebastian Wood CMG was also included, encouraging students to think creatively about their views and engage with the theme of responsible sovereignty in today's globalised society.

Essays will be no longer than 1000 words and will focus on the student's own views of what it means to be a major power in today's interdependent world. The competition will draw from a pool of the most promising international policy students in China, including eleven of the top universities in Shanghai and Beijing, and will run until the 8th November 2010. The winning entry will be announced just prior to the UK Prime Minister David Cameron's first state visit to China next month.
