Engaging Young Professionals in Strengthening Responsible Business
and Governance
The Program
Strengthening Responsible Business and Governance program aims to connect private sector, civil society and government leaders to improve the investment climate, contribute to economic development and foster leadership by integrating responsible business and good governance practices into corporate strategies and the mandates of public institutions across sectors.
The Competition
A core component of the program is to engage youth as crucial change-makers in both the
public and private sectors. In an effort to build onto the momentum of several continuing,
high-impact and innovative governance activities designed and implemented by youth
groups, the program now launches the Ideas for Action competition. The competition aims to
draw capable young professionals from across the worlds that are committed to inaugurating
responsible business practices and good governance initiatives.
Competition Eligibility
Young professionals and students between 18 and 35 years of age are encouraged to
participate.
Individual or group submissions are permitted.
For group submissions, please list all members and designate a single leader to
represent the group. All wining members will be acknowledged; however, the leaders
will receive the award and represent the group.
Submissions may be in English, French or Spanish.
Complete applications must be emailed to fightingcorruption@worldbank.org by
September 20, 2010.
Awards
Selected applicants will receive a certificate from the World Bank Institute, and an invitation
to attend the following two high-level conferences Ethics in Business – CCS World Youth Forum at the European Parliament in Brussels, which creates an open platform for the youth to voice their message to the world community at large! ( www.wfeb.org/wyf )
Travel arrangements, accommodation, and conference fees will be covered by the World
Bank Institute and its program partners.
Competition Instructions
Applicants should submit only one essay or video.
Topics (please choose ONE):
1. Business plan on an innovative monitoring model to prevent corruption and ensure
compliance in a specific sector. In addition, please provide a description of challenges and
practical solutions that could arise for the different stakeholders.
2. Essay on how young professionals and students can engage in Collective Action (CA) to
fight corruption. Please provide practical solutions that enable young people to join CA
initiatives and help improve business behavior and increase transparency in the business
environment.
3. Essay on the importance of social and environmental sustainable competiveness and
recommendations on how to foster responsible growth in your country or community.
Format Requirements:
Essays must be between 10 - 12 pages.
Essays must be accompanied by a one page, 200-300 word abstract.
Submissions should include registration form.
Abstracts and completed essays should be uploaded in one document as an Adobe
PDF or MS WORD document format (.doc) or (.docx).
Essays must be original, should not have been previously published and must be the genuine work of the submitting author(s) plagiarized submissions will be disqualified.

October 5, 2010 Notification of Winners
Evaluation
All submissions will be judged by a Program Committee, comprised of World Bank staff and
committee will select 3 winning submissions. The decision of the jury is final and is not
subject to an appeal.
