Write on ONE of the titles below in 2,000 words or less:
1. Malaysia’s global competitiveness ranking dropped three places to 24 for the period 2009-2010. What do you understand to be global competitiveness and what do you think should be done to raise Malaysia’s global rank.
2. In the latest Budget, the Prime Minister stated the goal for Malaysia to become a high-income economy. What do you think are essential ingredients for Malaysia to achieve high-income status?
3. Vision 2020’s deadline is less than a decade away. Compare Malaysia’s current position with the aspirations of Vision 2020 and outline the most important gaps that need to be addressed for the nation to achieve the goals of Vision 2020.

What we would really like is content that informs AND engages. Write for your peer group, who may not know much about the topic, or may not be particularly interested. How would you present your ideas and findings in a way that captures the attention and stirs the interest of your readers?

Feel free to include charts, graphs, images, or interview excerpts that strengthen your arguments. We also encourage you to include relevant personal experience and stories that would make your writing as compelling as possible.
Selected essays will be sent to the Perdana Leadership Foundation ‘Nurturing the Minds of Future Leaders’ Essay Writing Competition 2010.

DEADLINE
The deadline for this essay writing competition is 20 September 2010. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered.

PRIZES
Five winners will receive the following prizes:
First prize : RM 500 and certificate
Second prize : RM 300 and certificate
Third prize : RM 100 and certificate
Consolation prizes (x2) : RM 50 and certificate

ELIGIBILITY
This competition is open to all UniKL students, who are between 18 and 25 years old as of 31st December 2010.

SUBMISSION
1) Essays should be typed in a Word Document file (.doc) and can be sent in doc or pdf format. Formatting should use 11pt Arial, 1.5 paragraph spacing.
2) The length of the essay must not be longer than 2000 words, excluding footnotes and bibliography.
3) Essays must be sent as email attachments to cfs@unikl.edu.my. The subject/title of the e-mail should be ‘UniKL Essay Competition Entry 2010’.
4) All submissions will be blind reviewed. References to specific individuals, firms, or schools, which might reveal the author’s identity, are discouraged. Please do NOT include your name anywhere except on the cover page.
5) Quotes and references must be clearly marked throughout the essay and properly attributed.
6) Your narrative should be accompanied by references (footnotes or endnotes; for formatting guidelines, refer to the Harvard Referencing Guide)
7) All entries must be accompanied with a cover page bearing the following information:

RULES AND REGULATIONS
1) Each contestant may submit more than one essay, but will only be eligible for one prize. Participants of the previous edition of the Essay Competition are also encouraged to apply.
2) Essays must be written in English.
3) Each essay must be an original piece which has not been published. Contestants who submit plagiarized work will be disqualified. Please note that all essays will be screened with specialized software to verify plagiarism.
4) All entries will become the property of the organizer and it reserves the right to publish, display, reproduce and distribute them as long as this does not in any way affect the contestants’ rights. CFS reserves the right to modify the format and content of the submissions for publication purposes.
5) Results of winners will be announced by mid-October 2010. The winners will be notified by e-mail or telephone.
6) Judges’ decision is final and is not subject to an appeal.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Each essay submitted will be evaluated by at least two independent judges using the criteria below.
Quality of research (1/3 total score)
The quality of research will demonstrate knowledge and depth of understanding about the issues addressed. The following points will be considered:
• Adequately researched facts and well-supported points of view
• Proper citations of ideas and information from external sources
Quality of analysis (1/3 total score)
You should develop your own perspective on the issues and this should be reflected in your arguments, which should be clear, concise and supportive of your point of view. The following points will be considered:

• Thoughtful analysis of the subject matter
• An examination of the issues from a unique perspective
• The use of critical thinking to support analyses
Style and Creativity (1/3 total score)
Inclusion of charts, graphs, news clippings as well as the quality of your writing will also impact on your score. The following points will be considered:
• Creative presentation of ideas (eg: inclusion of relevant charts, graphs, news clippings that strongly support the main arguments)
• Free of errors in syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• A confident and coherent expression of ideas
