Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers (2010/11)
(for Undergraduates and University Graduates of Local Universities)

Background

The Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers (the Scholarship) is set up by the Education Bureau, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) as one of a series of measures to enhance the professionalism of English language teachers in Hong Kong.

Aim of the Scholarship

The aim of the Scholarship is to attract persons proficient in English to pursue relevant local bachelor degree programmes and/ or teacher training programmes which will qualify them to become English language teachers on graduation.

Eligibility for Application

Both local and non-local students may apply for the Scholarship.

Application is open to persons who will start pursuing a full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme majoring in English in local higher education institutions in 2010/11. Information about such programmes can be found on the website of the Education Bureau (EDB)(http://www.edb.gov.hk > Teachers’ Development > Training & Qualifications > Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers); Local students are persons, regardless of their nationalities, who do not require a student visa/ entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration for the purpose of education in Hong Kong. Non-local students are persons, regardless of their nationalities, who require a student visa/ entry permit issued by the Director of Immigration for the purpose of education in Hong Kong. Persons who have graduated and are employed in professions other than teaching, as well as those who are final year students graduating from relevant degree programmes in 2010 are included.

However, persons who are employed or were previously employed in the teaching profession, such as those who are holding or previously held permanent posts in primary or secondary schools in Hong Kong (day schools offering formal curriculum), are not eligible for the Scholarship.

Scholarship Amounts

Each local student will be awarded HK$50,000 and each non-local student, HK$80,000, for the pursuit of a full-time PGDE programme majoring in English Language.

Application and Selection

Applications for the Scholarship will be accepted from 29 July to 12 August 2010. To apply for the Scholarship, applicants should submit the completed application form and copies of supporting documents to the Professional Development and Training Division, Education Bureau (EDB). The application form is available from the EDB website (http://www.edb.gov.hk > Teachers’ Development > Training & Qualifications > Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers) by June 2010.

On the basis of public examination results attained, applicants will be shortlisted for selection interviews scheduled for the end of August 2010. The Scholarship will be awarded to applicants who are selected on the basis of merits. When all factors being considered are equal, priority will be given to applicants who intend to teach in primary schools, as indicated by the choice of their study programmes.

Shortlisted applicants will be informed of the results of the award of the Scholarship in September 2010.

Teaching Obligation

Awardees of the Scholarship should undertake to fulfill a teaching obligation by teaching English full-time in primary or secondary schools in Hong Kong (day schools offering formal curriculum) immediately after graduation. The duration of the teaching obligation is one year.
