THE Doreen Gamboa Fernandez (DGF) Food Writing Award announces the theme of this year’s competition -- breakfast or almusal. Now on its eighth year, the award is also accepting e-mailed entries for the first time.

Fernandez wrote about how Filipinos take breakfast in one of her essays. Some take homemade tablea tsokolate (a hot chocolate drink) to dip in suman, "sticky rice cooked with coconut milk (flavored with ginger, in Tagbilaran) or budbod kabog in Dumaguete (made of millet) or budbod Tanjay a few towns away." Others eat "pancit, lomi, mami, goto, arroz caldo (all of Chinese origin, the latter with a Spanish name), all available in market stalls."

All entries should be in essay form containing 800 words or 5,000 characters in Word format with the pen name of the contestant. There should be a separate info sheet containing the contestant’s pen name, real name, address, e-mail and contact numbers.

E-mailed entries should attach two files, the essay and info sheet, and should be sent to dgfawards@yahoo.com.ph. An e-mail will be sent acknowledging receipt of the entry.

For entries sent by regular mail or hand carried, the essay should be saved on CD while the info sheet should be in a sealed envelop. Address to DGF Awards 2010 c/o PRISM, 5th floor PDAF Bldg., Sen. Gil Puyat Ave., Makati. For inquiries, call Girlie Canlas at 895-2021 and 895-8184.

The deadline is midnight on Sept. 30. Winners will be announced in October. Awarding is in November at a dinner of the International Wine and Food Society, Manila Ladies Branch, the award sponsor.
