Etchings Indigenous is delighted to announce that thanks to the City of Port Phillip and Arts Victoria, they will be running the Etchings Indigenous Project again this year. They are currently looking for submissions for the upcoming issue, Etchings Indigenous: Treaty. The information below will provide an outline for anyone interested in this exciting project.

They are currently calling for submissions of short stories, poetry, essays, art and photography by Indigenous writers and artists who would like to see their work included in Etchings Indigenous: Treaty. Before submitting, please read the submission guidelines, below. This will ensure your submission gets to them correctly.

The Concept

Etchings Indigenous is a publication promoting the work of Indigenous writers and artists. Following on from the success of the first volume, Etchings Indigenous: Black & Sexy, a second publication, Etchings Indigenous: Treaty, will be produced over the coming months and launched as part of the Yalukit Willam Ngargee festival in St Kilda.

The project has two clearly defined objectives:

1) Mentorship program

All key editorial, design, and promotional roles will be performed by Indigenous interns. This aspect of the project can best be described as an educational opportunity providing valuable industry experience. The entire publishing process, including submissions, editing, proofreading, layout and design, printing, sales, marketing, and distribution, will be carried out by Indigenous interns under the mentorship of Ilura Press publishers and staff.

2) The publication

Etchings Indigenous: Treaty will provide a valuable platform for the work of new, emerging, and established Indigenous writers and artists. The project is designed to offer Indigenous Australians an opportunity to gain valuable industry specific work experience and publishing credits. Etchings Indigenous: Treaty will not only provide an outstanding opportunity for the writers and artists that are published, but also for the editors and administrators that form the production team. Internship applications are also currently being considered: email us with a letter of interest and CV. The anticipated RRP is $24.95 and the finished product will be of the same quality and design as Etchings Creative Journal and Etchings Indigenous: Black and Sexy.

Submission Guidelines

They accept submissions of all styles of short stories, poetry, personal & creative essays, photography, and art. All submissions must be unpublished. Please send us only your best and polished work. Submit work in standard format: typed, one-and-a-half or double spaced, A4. Photographs and artwork should be A4 size and 300dpi, and should be accompanied by the following information: title, date, size of original work, and media used. Please limit submissions to three prose pieces (max 5000 words per piece), or three images. Poetry submissions should include at least three, but no more than six poems.

Include a covering letter with your name, email address, phone number, postal address, and a short biography. If sending electronic submissions, include your cover letter as the first page of your submission, and NOT just in the text of the email. Please do not send your only or original copy; they cannot be responsible for the loss or non-arrival of submissions. Submissions will not be returned. Notification will be by email. If you require notification by post, please include a SSAE with sufficient Australian postage.

Individual copyright remains with the author. Submitting to Etchings Indigenous grants Ilura Press the right to publish the work in Etchings Indigenous: Treaty in print and in electronic form and to use the work in part or whole for promotional and marketing purposes related to the Etchings Indigenous project.

Contributors are paid AU$80 and receive one copy of the issue they appear in. For poetry, this fee covers three to five pages of poems; a fee of AU$40 is paid for poems covering up to two pages. Email electronic submissions to: etchindig@ilurapress.com; send hard-copy submissions to:
