Education, human rights and social justice in East Asia
Guest Editors: Audrey OSLER and LEUNG Yan Wing
Across the globe and specifically in East Asia, there is increasing interest in education for human rights and social justice, as educators, policymakers and civil society seek to respond to the needs of young people in a rapidly changing world. Policymakers face the challenge of developing education systems that not only prepare learners to participate in fast-changing economies but also support them in learning to live together in contexts of diversity and in resolving conflicts peacefully.
This call for papers invites contributions on education for human rights and social justice from a range of local and national contexts across East Asia, including original research studies, critical reviews of recent research, and cutting-edge discussion articles examining key challenges facing educators and learners working to realise human rights.
We particularly welcome articles that address one or more of the following themes, although we will consider other contributions which critically examine contemporary educational concerns using a human rights framework:
• policy and practice relating to children’s rights in education;
• the application of human rights principles in specific cultural and educational contexts;
• human rights and intercultural education;
• tensions between national and cosmopolitan perspectives in educating for citizenship and human rights;
• learning for peace and social justice in schools and communities.
Papers submitted for this special edition should not normally exceed 5000 words, excluding references.

All submissions will be subject to the journal’s standard peer-review processes. This will include initial editor screening (all submissions) and blind reviewing by two anonymous referees for submissions selected form the initial screening.
