The CAL Scribe Fiction Prize

After the overwhelming success of the inaugural CAL Scribe Fiction Prize, we are pleased to announce that the prize money in 2011 has been increased to $15,000. The winning novel will also be published by Scribe.

Once again, we are searching for the best unpublished manuscript by a writer aged 35 or over. Entries are now open.

This year, as a means of reducing paper wastage, we are encouraging writers to submit electronically. Email info@scribepub.com.au with the following attached as Word documents or RTFs:

* your full manuscript
* a synopsis of your manuscript (up to 300 words)
* an author bio (up to 50 words).

Then post your completed entry form to us, including your payment details for the $40 entry fee.

(If you cannot submit your entry electronically, you may post us a hard copy of your manuscript, synopsis, bio and entry form instead.)

Entries close on 15 September.

About the prize

In August 2009, Scribe launched the CAL Scribe Fiction Prize for an unpublished manuscript by an Australian writer aged 35 and over, regardless of publication history. The winner receives $15,000 and a book contract from Scribe.

Many writers only find the time and have acquired the life experience to write fiction later in life. This prize recognises that there are many examples of late bloomers when it comes to writers, certainly in terms of getting published. Youth is already celebrated in so many ways, and Scribe wants to support writers who are emerging or still going strong in their prime.

It is Scribe’s intention that this prize will raise the profile of Australian fiction, demonstrate our commitment to local authors, and find a wonderful new voice and/or novel. Last year's winner, A Darker Music by Maris Morton, will be in bookstores everywhere this October. The other shortlisted manuscripts (Meg Mundell's Black Glass and Jane Sullivan's Little People) will also be released by Scribe in 2011.

Scribe gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the CAL Cultural Fund.
