The Bellad Shikshana and Krishi Pratisthana of Dharwad will organize an essay and elocution competition for the school and college students. MLA and president of the pratisthana, Chandrakant Bellad, told reporters here on Monday that the objective is to evoke patriotic feelings among the students who are being carried away by the Western culture thrust upon them by the electronic media.

The topics will be related to freedom struggle and ways and means to develop India into a superpower. Bellad said several freedom fighters who did not tow Congress' ideology during the pre-Independence days have not been give their due share in the historical books and school textbooks. There is a need for the children to know about all those who fought for the country. The essay contest will focus on freedom fighters who sacrificed their well-being for the country, but were deprived of due recognition in the post-Independent India dominated by Congress rule, he explained.

Bellad regretted that Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations were becoming government-sponsored programmes, whereas they should have been celebrated with pomp and gaiety by all people. "These are occasions to arouse patriotism among the people and rededicate ourselves to the nation," he asserted. He said the pratisthana will plan week-long programmes to create a sense of involvement among the children as well as adults about the nation and its welfare.
