What we are looking for in a story -
FlagShip is looking for the sort of science fiction and fantasy that we grew up on. We’re looking for thrills and chills. We’re on a quest for heroes and villains. We want narrow escapes, races against time and worlds in the balance. We’re seeking to instill a sense of wonder and optimism that we loved so much in our classic science fiction.
We also want to have a purpose beyond mere entertainment. We want to bring our readers more than the literary equivalent of cotton candy. Stories can teach us important lessons about life, the universe, and everything. From science fiction we get the great cautionary tales of Bradbury, and Orwell. From fantasy we get the social commentary of Johnathan Swift and the great sweeping themes of Tolkien.
FlagShip is looking for stories with a positive spin. We’re not Utopians. We realize that bad stuff happens, and not everyone that wears a white hat is a good guy. But science fiction and fantasy are primarily forms of escapism. We’re looking for places we’d like to escape TO. Consider us the modern equivalent of Astounding Stories circa 1950. Please realize that audiences have grown substantially more sophisticated in the interim. Write accordingly.
We prefer stories that are uplifting and generally optimistic in their outlook and portrayal of humanity (if present in your story) or of intelligent life in general. While we recognize that violence and sex are a part of life, gratuitous use of either is grounds for rejection. We do not publish erotica.
We need stories between 2000 and 7000 words, other than that, the sky’s the limit.
What We Buy -
FlagShip purchases exclusive electronic text and audio rights for 90 days. If you wish to shop your story elsewhere after that time is up, feel free. We would prefer to be able to keep your story available past the 90 days, but that’s up to you. If you want us to take a story down after the 90 days are up, let us know and we’ll make the necessary adjustments.
