Dash Arts is delighted to have launched the Dash Arabic Series: four major commissions by artists from across the Arabic-speaking world and a wider programme of free events at the Dash Café.
After a very successful launch with Babel (words) at Sadler's Wells in May, our Arabic Series continues with work presented over the next two years in London, at venues including the Barbican and the Roundhouse. Working with artists from North Africa, the near East and the Arab Diaspora, alongside key partners in the UK and abroad, we will present innovative theatre, music and dance that has both classical richness and contemporary vitality.
Our Arabic Series is a powerful celebration of Arabic artistic identity that we hope will challenge pre-conceived notions of Arabic culture, offering new perspectives and unheard voices.
The Series began with Babel (words) at Sadler’s Wells, a new contemporary dance work conceived and created by Sidi Larbi Cherkoaui, Damien Jalet and Antony Gormley exploring visual, physical and spoken language. Read some of the fantastic reviews.
In the Autumn of 2010 we continue with Lyrical Alliance at the Roundhouse, an international collaboration between hip hop artists from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and the United States that has ancient traditional Arabic verse at its core.
We will also co-produce a tribute to the great Egyptian diva, Oum Kalsoum, the First Lady of Arabic Song, with the Barbican and in the Autumn of 2011 our new Dash Arts theatre production of One Thousand and One Nights, commissioned by the Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, directed by Tim Supple and adapted by Tim and Hanan al- Shaykh, will come to the UK.
Accompanying these commissions and throughout the Series, we will present films and talks, as well as showcasing the results of an extensive community based participation programme. We aim, to understand and reveal the diverse cultural identities, skills and artistic influences that inform the work of artists across the Arabic region and in the Diaspora. Join us on a voyage of discovery.
