Arab-Israeli Book Club Discusses the Novel A Trumpet The Wadi
Back by popular demand, the Arab-Israeli Book Club explores Sami Michael’s celebrated novel A Trumpet in the Wadi.

Originating in Baghdad, Michael explains that “Sometimes, I feel I am two persons. One is an Arab Iraqi, the other an Israeli Jew.” A Trumpet in the Wadi celebrates this doubleness. Set in Haifa just before the 1982 war in Lebanon, Michael allows us to enter the lives of extraordinary sisters Huda and Mary, Christian Arabs, and their comi-tragic romantic entanglements with Russian Jewish trumpet players and other forbidden partners. In the interwoven communities of Jews and Arabs, Michael’s characters challenge the status quo, finding love against all odds in a triumphant tale of wit and wonder.

Join writer and lecturer Ariel Kahn, together with celebrated Palestinian novelist Samir El-Youssef, once again for what promises to be a stimulating discussion.

“The room fizzed with energy: a roaring success.”
The Guardian on the Arab-Israeli Book Club.

In partnership with New Israel Fund.

The next book discussed will be The Secret Life of Saeed by Emile Habiby, on June 10th at the Magdala at 8pm.
