Term: August 2010 – August 2011
Remuneration: $2500 honorarium inclusive of all expenses incurred
The Poet Laureate will act as an ambassador for poetry, language and the arts; he/she will create a unique artistic legacy through public readings and civic interactions. The Poet Laureate will attend a variety of civic functions and participate in public poetry events in London. The general mandate is to raise awareness of the arts in the everyday consciousness of Londoners. Submissions are invited from literary artists who currently reside in the City of London, who have an established body of work and are recognized for their active participation and contribution to the literary arts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• creation of three (3) original works of poetry that reflect or represent ideas and issues of importance to the London community
• presenting works of significance at City of London events or official functions
• participation in the communication of unique messaging for the launch of Culture Days September 24, 25, 26, 2010
• other duties will be developed in consultation with the selected artist.
Criteria for Selection:
• Be a current resident of the City of London
• Be a practicing literary artist
• Have produced work that demonstrates poetic flexibility (more than one style)
• Be personable, professional and engaging
• Have the ability to speak publicly to small – large audiences
Submission Requirements:
Eligible literary artists are invited to submit proposals that must include the following materials;
• Curriculum vitae
• A brief Artist Statement
• Submission Form(found below)
and
• Appropriate examples of past work which may include the following options:
o published books or;
o anthologies;
o literary journals;
o poetry chapbooks;
o web journals;
o a CD of performed work (audio performances or poetry videos) or a list of relevant links to performance works
Selection Process:
Submissions will be adjudicated by an independent jury convened for the project which will include a practicing literary professional as well as representatives from the local community. The review process may include a reading and interview with the jury. Submissions must be received no later than Thursday June 3rd 2010 at NOON (submissions will not be accepted past the deadline). Submissions will not be accepted by fax or email.
