Description: We think that the wars for Viet Nam should be known in the words of those who fought them; that the story of the Vietnamese boat people is best learned through the literary work of those on the boats; and that the nation the wars were fought for, which the people carried with them overseas, is the real story and is best read in the words of those Vietnamese who are good at writing. Vietnamese writers are of general interest for what they have to say from Viet Nam about our common world. Their wars touched generations around the planet because they were fighting out the conflicts of national independence and personal freedom that touch us all. Their emigration was just the most eloquent of what has become a contemporary state of being. Their assimilation to the USA, Australia, and France and their adaptation at home to globalization are the stuff of everyone’s daily life.
