The M Literary Residency Program Announces Inaugural Recipients: Tash Aw and Colie Hoffman
The M Literary Residency announced today that it has selected the recipients for its inaugural Residency programs in China and India. Tash Aw was selected for the China Residency, based in Shanghai, while Colie Hoffman won the India Residency, in Pondicherry.

The M Residency was established in 2009 by Michelle Garnaut founder of both the M Restaurant Group and the Shanghai International Literary Festival, and writer Pankaj Mishra. The Residency funds a three month stay in Shanghai or Pondicherry, with the goals of disseminating a broader knowledge of contemporary life and writing in India and China today, and fostering deeper intellectual, cultural and artistic links across individuals and communities.

Tash Aw, a Malaysian-born novelist now living in London, will be working on his third novel, which is set in Shanghai. Colie Hoffman is an American poet, who will use the residency to work on her first full-length book of poetry.

“We received 82 applications, many of them of an extremely high standard,” says Michelle Garnaut. “But Tash and Colie stood out with a combination of fine writing, a well developed project, and clear evidence of how a residency in each respective place would benefit their work.”

Applications for the 2011 Residency open on May 1. Please visit www.m-literaryfestival.com for application forms and information.
