In 2010, The Korea Times will hold the 41st Modern Korean Literature Translation Awards. This annual competition awards English translations of works of contemporary Korean literature in two categories: fiction (including drama) and poetry.
Applicants may submit one translation of a work of Korean fiction or drama of any length or of ten poems by the same poet. Applicants must only submit one entry in any one category. Translations submitted must not have been published in any form prior to the deadline set for submissions. Entries for The Korea Times Awards must not have been submitted for any other translation contest in the same year.
General Rules
In both categories, the judges will be looking for accurate translations in good English of significant works of contemporary literature. Works that have already been published in English translation in book form must not be translated again for the contest. Would-be contestants who are uncertain if their proposed work has already been translated and published should email a query to The Korea Times email address at ktculture@gmail.com
Translators are strongly encouraged to work as a team, combining native speakers of both languages. Someone who has received a commendation award in a category is not eligible for further prizes in that category for the following two years. Someone who has received a Grand Prize in a category is not eligible for further prizes in that category.
Entries must be submitted with the original Korean texts, and biographical notes on the author and translators, including the full mailing address, telephone and e-mail addresses of the translators. Manuscripts must be computer-printed and double-spaced with a cover page containing the title of the original work and the name of the translators.
Deadline for submissions : Sept. 1, 2010
Prizes:
Grand Prize in Fiction (or Drama) - 5 million won
Grand Prize in Poetry - 2 million won
