Jaspreet Singh is the next rising star in Asian Literature and this is his only London appearance. Short-listed for the 2009 Commonwealth Prize for best book, Chef is an outstanding and brave debut novel, set against the beautiful, war-scarred backdrop of occupied Kashmir.
In Srinigar, a contradictory place of erratic violence, privilege and extreme temperatures, a young military chef arrives at General Kumar’s camp. As a Sikh he feels secure in his allegiance to India in Kashmir’s on-going conflict, until he meets a Pakistanti “prisoner” who changes his life.
